Yarns

Manos del Uruguay yarns are crafted by hand, and dyed in small pots, which allows obtaining a wide variety of colors with the shades and the richness of tones that characterize them.

At the beginning only wool was utilized, for it being a noble material and one of the countrys major natural resources.  Little by little other natural fibers were incorporated, such as flax, silk, and alpaca, which, always mixed with wool, generated new textures and coloring.

This combination, together with craft dying, has created a great richness of textures and tones, obtaining a wide variety of proposals.

Our colors: our best hallmark

At the beginning, the faded and space dyed colors were seen as an imperfection, we did not achieve the consistency of industrial dying.  Colors were faded, but not even.   Yarns were dyed in big iron pots on a fire made with logs.  Iron interacted with anilines, making it difficult to obtain an even color.

It was a marketing consultant who saw the beauty of the different colorings obtained through this process, and named them space-dyed colors.

Throughout the years, the process has been perfected: using stainless steel pots and heating in gas ovens we could control the whole procedure, and thus, obtain predictable results, while keeping their craft nature.

In this way, a wide 90-unique-color range was generated, where each color deploys infinite tones, maintaining the charm of crafts.

The space dyed colors became Manos del Uruguay hallmark.
